WhatsApp Rewrote Its Price List for Every Reply This Month. Here Is What Actually Changed.

Did your WhatsApp bill change this month? For any business that sells or takes enquiries on WhatsApp, the answer is yes. From October 1, 2026, the rules that decide whether a reply is free or billed moved underneath you (Gadgets Now). Some of it brings good news. Some of it adds a new account risk. Here is what moved, plainly.

Did the free allowance on WhatsApp just get smaller?

The allowance shrank, if you connect through the API via a provider or software. Your free form replies inside the customer service window, once free, now carry the same charge as a utility or authentication message (Messangi). A utility message sent inside an already open window used to cost nothing. It carries a charge too, now (Messangi). An allowance still exists. Each phone number carries 1,000 free service messages a month, and that allowance does not carry into the next month (Messangi; Leyscale Digital). A charge only lands once the message actually reaches the customer, not once you send it (mint). Some situations stay free regardless of the window, too. A reply to a customer who opened the chat through your WhatsApp ad can stay free for an eligible 72 hour window (Eutian; Business Standard). And if you still run WhatsApp through the free Business app on a phone rather than through the API, none of these particular charges touch you at all (Gadgets Now). WhatsApp also widened how you can pay. You can settle the new charges with an eligible card, and some businesses can qualify for a monthly invoiced credit line instead (IBTimes India). Anyone without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026 faced blocked service messages from October 1 (mint).

Does the free WhatsApp Business app still cost nothing?

The free app does not stay free for every feature inside it. Business Broadcasts, the mass messaging feature inside the free Business app, now bills you for each message a contact receives within five days after you send it (lodpost.com). Prepaid credit packs for those broadcasts currently work only on iOS devices (lodpost.com). Unused credit does not expire, under WhatsApp's own documentation (lodpost.com). One to one replies on the free app stay free. A broadcast sent from it does not.

Is your WhatsApp account itself more exposed now?

WhatsApp retired its older business account signup tool on October 15, 2026, so any business or provider that still uses it must migrate to the newer version to add new numbers (Manifest AI - Resources). WhatsApp rolls out a server side check that can block access for a phone that uses an outdated iOS or Android version (Zee Business).

Account access is a live concern elsewhere, too. Malaysia's communications regulator demanded an explanation after it received 92 complaints that WhatsApp accounts were suspended, made inaccessible or accessed without permission (Free Malaysia Today | FMT). A technical fault wrongly flagged legitimate user activity as a rule breach, and that fault accounted for more than half of the first batch of suspended cases the regulator reviewed (Free Malaysia Today | FMT). Nothing here says your account will sit inside that batch. The cost of a mistaken loss of WhatsApp access still rose this month.

Does a direct WhatsApp API connection solve this for you?

A direct connection to the WhatsApp Business Platform, the kind a developer messaging API gives you, puts you straight in front of these rules with nothing in between. Your rate depends on the country you message into. As at October 2026, India prices a utility message at Rs 0.115 before tax (Eutian), Germany's delivered message rate is $0.055 (MonoChat), and Brazil's own documentation cites an example rate of $0.0068 for a similar message (Mavibot).

A new feature softens some of this. You can now set the maximum price you will pay per delivered marketing message, in open beta for every partner on the platform (ChatMaxima Blog - Navigating Conversations: Insights from ChatMaxima). WhatsApp also moves away from the phone number as the sole customer record, toward a unique customer identifier tied to your business for every API based integration (ChatMaxima Blog - Navigating Conversations: Insights from ChatMaxima). None of this writes the reply for you. Someone on your side still has to track the right country rate, the open payment method and the account checks above, message by message.

Where does an automated reply fit under the new rules?

The answer depends on which kind of automated reply you mean. WhatsApp's business terms restrict use of your WhatsApp data to train a general artificial intelligence model, and allow only a narrow exception to fine tune a model for your own exclusive use (MonoChat). A separate policy, effective January 15, 2026, blocks a general purpose artificial intelligence assistant provider from WhatsApp when the artificial intelligence itself is the primary product, unless local law requires it (MonoChat). WhatsApp's own automated business agent feature bills separately, at $2 for every 1 million tokens of text it processes, a charge in effect since August 1, 2026 (Gadgets Now). A typical reply from that agent runs about 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, roughly 4 to 5 US cents for one delivered message (Mathrubhumi English). More than 1 million businesses now use an agent like it every week, across WhatsApp and a sister messaging app from the same company (Yahoo Finance). It does not support finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling, over the counter drugs or matrimony businesses at all (mesej).

Why does this favour a small business with one number?

You do not run a billing team. You run a business that needs every WhatsApp enquiry answered 24/7, in whatever language the customer uses. YunaChat replies to each conversation like an extra staff member, and does not ask you to track a country rate or an open payment method yourself. It remembers the conversation your buyer already had. It does not restart at the first question every time they come back. It stays inside one subscription, not a rate sheet that multiplies every reply into a separate line on your bill. If your trade sells or answers enquiries on WhatsApp, see the plans.

They do not apply to one to one replies sent from the free Business app. They apply to the API used through a provider or software. The app's own Broadcast feature carries a separate charge.
